Mission Statement

The School for Tourism and Hospitality is an exciting school where students are prepared to become leaders in the workplace.  Teachers reach students by connecting real-world problems to the skills students will need to succeed in college and career.  These skills are: creating a theory, research, analysis, communication, self-monitoring, self-direction and working in teams.  Using these skills as their foundation, students will continue their path to be becoming leaders in the workplace, by earning an industry recognized certification at the end of the 10th grade, followed by a second certification as a specialist at the end of the 12th grade.  Students will also earn up to four college credits before they graduate high school.

We believe in teaching the “whole student” – without judgment – in an environment that supports their academic and social development.  Learning should be fun and we make it a priority at STH!

Our core values are:

  • Empathy – students are known by staff who care deeply about their success and well-being
  • Focus – adults hold students and themselves accountable to do and be their best every day
  • Motivation – students are enthusiastic and believe school is meaningful; staff look for opportunities to inspire students and compliment them on their drive to succeed

Vision Statement

Our vision is to become THE school in New York City that best understands how to foster motivation in students; regardless of their economic background or initial skill-set when they first enter our school.

Curriculum

If you think the hospitality/tourism industry is all about cleaning rooms, checking in guests, making flight reservations and preparing meals you may be surprised to find out how many choices there really are. Each hotel/resort or restaurant can be like its own little city, with jobs ranging from van driver to accountant, and from security officer to retail manager. Students with an interest in leadership will find a wealth of opportunities in the industry!  Our graduates will be prepared for careers in management; specifically, the supervision of:

  • Facilities
  • Human Resources
  • Information Technology

Students will take Career and Technical Education classes in Tourism/Hospitality Law, Marketing, Food/Beverage Operations, Event Planning, Facilities Management, Information Technology Management, and Rooms Division Management.  A large selection of college classes also exists.

In addition to our career-focused elective curriculum, students will take rigorous academic classes that prepare them for college.  These courses are listed as Regents diploma requirements on the Department of Education’s website (http://schools.nyc.gov).

What Makes Us Special?

Every student at our school is known well by our teachers and staff.  We make sure that students feel welcome and appreciated every day.  Each student is paired with an Advisor who gets to know them.  This makes the difference!  Students know that they have someone that they can go to about any issue they might be having.  We care about our students and it shows!

Support for All

We believe that all students deserve support that is tailored especially to their needs.  These supports are provided to all students, general education, special education and English language learners.  Specialists are available who understand the challenges of each of these students and they work with these students, both inside and outside of the classroom.  Some classrooms have two certified/talented teachers who work with a variety of students in the same room (general education, special education, English language learners). We also provide specialized tutoring for every student at the end of the school day.  Teachers refer students for this tutoring and contact the parent to let them know how the student can benefit and improve by attending.  A portfolio of the support provided/student’s work is kept and reviewed with parents weekly.

Our Partners

We are proud to work with people throughout our city who care about the success of our students.  These partners help us to provide students with the experiences they need to become successful leaders in the workplace.

  • Benchmark Hospitality International
  • Columbia University – Urban Science Education Center
  • Hotel Association of New York City
  • NYC & Company
  • Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers

Extracurricular Activities

Students at STH have fun inside the classroom; but they also have many choices to have fun outside of the classroom too.  Students who like sports will be able to join the baseball, basketball, softball or volleyball teams.  We also have art, chorus, drama and web design clubs.  Those students who want to lead out at our school are welcome to join the principal’s advisory council, national honor society and student government.
